Summer 2021 Intensive Course in Research Writing
We are pleased to announce our 14th annual Intensive Course in Research Writing. This course will be given remotely, via Zoom. It will run from Wednesday, July 7, 2021, through Monday, August 9, 2021. The course will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon US Central Daylight Time.
This course is designed mainly to help researchers increase their proficiency in writing and publishing scientific papers. It also includes instruction on related topics, such as giving oral presentations, preparing poster presentations, and writing grant proposals.
To benefit fully from the course, participants should have a draft paper that is ready to revise, or they should have research that is fully analyzed and ready to write up. Participants should expect to spend several hours per day on homework.
The main instructor for the course is Barbara Gastel, MD, MPH, a professor at Texas A&M University and lead author of How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper, 8th edition. The course also includes guest presentations, and each participant receives an editorial mentor. Participants have online access to the textbook and the university library.
This course is open to both US and international participants. To enroll, international participants must provide evidence of English proficiency at least equivalent to that commonly required for US graduate school admission. As in past years, the fee to attend the course is $1,500 (US).
The course is intended largely for early-career researchers, including postdoctoral fellows and recently appointed faculty members. It also can aid science editors. Experienced faculty members sometimes attend in preparation to give similar instruction to their own students.
The application deadline for the course is May 1, 2021. Earlier application is encouraged, to help ensure that space will be available and to facilitate recruiting a suitable number and range of editorial mentors.
We welcome requests for further information about the course.
