Professor Leif B. Andersson Receives the Grand Prize of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters – Professor E.J. Nyström’s Prize 2025

The Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters has awarded prizes to eight prominent researchers for their significant scientific achievements. The prizes were presented at the Society’s Annual Celebration on 29 April 2025. In addition, three upper secondary school teachers received prizes. The total prize sum amounted to €146,000.

The Grand Prize – the 2025 Professor E.J. Nyström’s Prize (€50,000) – was awarded to Professor Leif B. Andersson (Uppsala University) for his outstanding contribution to genome biology of domestic animals and natural animal populations.

PhD Joonas Hirvonen, University of Nottingham (The Prize of the PhD Mikael Björnberg Memorial Fund, €10,000)

PhD Susanna Heikkilä, University of Helsinki (Magnus Ehrnrooth prize for the best doctoral dissertations in mathematics accepted at a Finnish university last year, €5,000)

PhD Laura Vuorinen, University of Turku (Magnus Ehrnrooth prize for the best doctoral dissertations in physics accepted at a Finnish university last year, €5,000)

Doctor of Science (Technology) Daniel Langerreiter, Aalto University (Magnus Ehrnrooth prize for the best doctoral dissertations in chemistry accepted at a Finnish university last year, €5,000)

Lecturer Axel Holmberg, Hangö Gymnasium (Teacher Prize, €5,000)

Lecturer Lauri Hellsten, Espoon yhteislyseo (Teacher Prize, €5,000)

Lecturer Lea Kaijansinkko, Lappeenrannan Lyseon lukio (Teacher Prize, €5,000)

Each awardee’s school will also receive €2,000 for the development of the relevant subject area.
